“Bengawan Solo” is an Indonesian folk song composed by Gesang Martohartono during the war. Later, due to colonialism, the repatriation of war prisoners, immigration, and other factors, this love song dedicated to the Bengawan River was adapted into different languages and versions across Southeast Asia over the following decades. It appeared in various films in different forms, eventually becoming one of the most recognisable Southeast Asian songs across regions. The sound installation Bengawan Solo selects a segment of the song from Asian films every ten years—spanning the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s—and reinterprets it as a radio drama in the form of a sound film. The same melody is featured in three different stories from Japan, Hong Kong, and Indonesia, each reflecting a love story shaped by the distinct political climates and social pressures of those respective decades.
