The Camera series investigates the epistemological meaning of archival images, questioning the purpose of the collection and the methodology of production. In The Camera (65), referencing an old portrait of a Chinese coolie taken in 1865 and displayed in the Indentured Labour Museum at Aapravasi Ghat, which was used as an important depot for the global coolie trade. The existence of the portrait revealed the engagement of photographic apparatus at the early stage of the coolie system, as a revolutionary machine for the control and management of human labour forces. This short video attempts to recreate how this specific portrait was captured through the gaze of a British coloniser by turning the camera lens, leading the audience to view this moment through the protagonist's perspective.
