In the multimedia installation The Cultural Center, Chihying employs display techniques reminiscent of those used in museums and cultural institutions to examine and showcase images. The installation features a series of five commemorative coins and transparent monochrome images, drawing inspiration from the "China’s Treasure Island of Taiwan General Commemorative" coins issued as political propaganda by the Chinese government between 2003 and 2005. The installation centres around a round lighting table displaying numerous black and white circular images that imply Chinese influences and Global South strategies, using currency as a medium to deconstruct the hidden network of the world economy. Through Chihying’s newly designed set of commemorative coins, the artist explores themes of geopolitical imagination and assertion; each coin represents one of five African cultural institutions established or constructed by multinational Chinese firms. These institutions include a theatre, two cultural palaces, a history museum, and an art museum. The monochrome image boards, displayed on circular light boxes, served as initial references for the coin designs. Ultimately, they unveil a global history of colonialism—transcending national borders and time—transforming the unseen nodes of political tension into a visible and tangible artwork.
